Differentiating STAPH from MICROCOCCUS

Staphylococcus and Micrococcus belongs the Micrococaceae family. They are both Gram positive and catalase positive bacteria. The following are their main differences

Micrococcus is not lysed with the presence of lysostaphin
Staphylococcus is lysed with the presence of lysostaphin

Micrococcus is resistant to ferazolidone
Staphylococcus is susceptible to ferazolidone

Micrococcus is oxidase positive
Staphylococcus is oxidase negative

Micrococcus is susceptible to bacitracin
Staphylococcus is resistant to bacitracin

Micrococcus grows aerobically
Staphylococcus is facultaively anaerobe

Now, with this facts, microbiologist/ medical technologists are expected to identify which organisms is which.
